Millennials may soon outgrown baby boomers

The baby boomer generation holds virtually all ownership stakes, but the millennial generation may soon overtake them.

Compared to Generation X and millennials, baby boomers hold everything from equities to homes to cash.

Market veteran Ed Yardeni calculated that baby boomers hold $75 trillion, surpassing Generation X’s $40 trillion and ten times millennials’ $8 trillion.

Assets by generation:

1 – Bonds and stocks

Boomers: $20.1 trillion
Gen-X: $9.4 trillion
Millennials: $0.8 trillion

2 – Real property

Boomers: $18.0 trillion
Gen-X: $13.4 trillion
Millennials: $5.0 trillion

3 – Pensions

Boomers: $15.3 trillion
Gen-X: $8.8 trillion
$2.3 trillion.

4 – Private company

Boomers: $7.9 trillion
Gen-X: $6.0 trillion
$1.5 trillion Millennials

5 – Cash

Boomers: $8.9 trillion
Gen-X: $3.9 trillion
$1.6 trillion.

Given baby boomers’ professional headstart and capital accumulation, the generational wealth gap isn’t surprising.

Millennials will have the same benefit as baby boomers—time—as they enter their prime professional and salary years.

The youngest baby boomer is 60, whereas the youngest millennial is 27. That three-decade age disparity shows that as millennials earn more, baby boomers are either retired or about to retire.
