Is Retirement Travel Costing You Less Than You Thought? – Property Resource Holdings Group

Reasons Why Your Travel Expenses May Be Lower During Retirement Than You Had Anticipated

Is Retirement Travel Costing You Less Than You Thought?

We think that when we retire, we’ll finally go on those trips that have been on our “bucket list” for years. But a recent study shows that when we retire and have time and some savings, we might actually spend much less on travel than we think we will. This is good news because it means we might need less money to retire.

Economists often talk about the ideal of smoothing consumption as a way to make the best financial plans. That’s when we spend a lot and borrow a lot when we’re young, make a lot of money and pay it off when we’re middle-aged (when our earning potential is at its highest) and save enough to retire and live off our savings when we’re older.

The problem is that figuring out how much money we might need is hard. We don’t know what interest and bank rates will be in the future, how our households and their needs might change, or, most importantly, how long we will live. So how do we know how much money we will need? Some economists say that we should cut our budget a little bit every year to get ready, but if we live even a little bit longer than we planned, we could have trouble paying our bills.

But a new study by Susann Rohwedder, Michael Hurd, and Péter Hudomiet of the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California, has some good news for people who want to travel when they retire. They used information from a mail survey from the University of Michigan’s Health and Retirement Survey, which is run by the National Institute on Aging and is paid for by the Social Security Administration. The second is a long-term study that keeps asking questions of 20,000 Americans from all over the country.

The data shows that people don’t need as much money as they think for vacations when they retire. People may spend less in their 80s than in their 50s because they want to, not because they can’t. This could be for a number of different reasons.

People’s interests in activities change as they get older. For example, people say that as they get older, they get less pleasure out of travelling. It’s not a surprise that this is more true when our health is bad.

So, even though we have time and a little bit of money to go travelling, we might not want to.
