Aija Kalnaja, the newly appointed interim director of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, also known as Frontex, issued a warning on Monday that the European Union should prepare for new “waves of migration” in the midst of the food security crisis that has been fueled by the conflict in Ukraine.

While addressing the media in Prague, Kalnaja stated that the European Union is “fully prepared for refugees arriving from Ukraine.”

“At the same time, we are going to have to make preparations for refugees who are going to be arriving from other regions due to food insecurity. She told them, “You undoubtedly already know that grain transport from Ukraine is being impeded, and that this would cause waves of migration.”

In a piece that it published one month ago, the Spanish newspaper El Pais cited a 27-page internal EU analysis on the probable repercussions of the violence in Ukraine. A warning that “a devastating famine” was on its way to North Africa was included.

According to the research, hunger might lead to “new waves of social upheaval, internal displacement, and migration to adjacent regions and possibly towards the EU.” According to the article, the countries of Spain and Italy will be at the vanguard of the emigration process in the event that this scenario is realised.

Kiev and western nations have levelled accusations against Russia, saying that Russia is preventing food shipments from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, which is reportedly leading to rising costs for food around the world. Moscow has stated that it has been providing safe passage to freighters, while Ukraine has been prohibiting civilian ships from leaving the ports, notably Odessa. Moscow has refuted the allegations made by Ukraine. In addition to this, Russia asserts that Kiev’s placement of naval mines has made navigation in the region more hazardous.

Moscow has levelled the accusation that the West is responsible for bringing about a crisis in the global economy. Late in the month of March, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a statement condemning what he called the “questionable methods and actions” of politicians in Western nations on their economic, energy, and agricultural policies. According to Putin, these strategies have resulted in disruptions in production and logistics networks, an increase in global inflation, increased inequality, a reduction in the living standards of millions of people, and widespread starvation in the world’s poorest countries. He also stated that another wave of migration, particularly toward European countries, will certainly follow the food crisis as a direct consequence of it.
