Apple’s ChatGPT rival didn’t show up at its important AI summit

Apple thinks that its machine-learning team is “truly at the forefront,” but at the employee-only event, it doesn’t show off any “game-changing” tech.

With WWDC coming up in just a few months, the Apple community will soon be talking about the company’s latest software improvements. AI is going to get a lot of attention this year, especially if a new mixed-reality headset comes out. But this year at WWDC, you’re probably not going to see a competitor to ChatGPT or Bing.

Apple recently held its “annual internal summit to discuss ongoing machine learning and artificial intelligence advancements.” At this meeting, the company talked about the latest AI developments in the industry. In a brochure that Mark Gurman of Bloomberg saw, Apple said that its work on machine learning is “moving faster than ever” and that the AI teams are “truly at the forefront” of their fields. But Gurman’s sources say that the event, which was Apple’s first in-person AI summit since 2019 and lacked details, was not very informative.

Even though the keynote was full of optimism about the future of AI, Gurman says he hasn’t heard of any new products that will change the game. In particular, he says that Apple didn’t show off a competitor to ChatGPT, New Bing, or “anything of the sort.”

That doesn’t mean that a next-generation chatbot isn’t being made, but it’s likely not going to be at WWDC this year. With so much attention on ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing, and Google’s Bard, Apple would have taken some time to show off or talk about the latest developments in AI, which almost certainly would have leaked. Since there’s nothing new to say, it looks like Apple is still taking its time when it comes to AI and machine learning tools that will make a big splash.
