The National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) has just released data that show that in April 2022:
International tourists spent $12.7 billion on travel to the United States and tourism-related activities there. This is a 136% increase from April 2021.
The US had a balance of trade surplus of $1.8 billion for the month because Americans spent $10.9 billion travelling abroad. This was the sixth month in a row that the US had a balance of trade surplus for travel and tourism.
“Travel Receipts” made up more than half (54%) of all travel exports for the first time since February 2020.
Since COVID-19 was announced in February 2020, April was the month when the most money was spent by international tourists in the United States.
How Monthly Spending Is Broken Down (Travel Exports)
Travel Receipts
International visitors to the United States spent $6.8 billion on travel and tourism-related goods and services in April 2022, up from $1.5 billion in April 2021. This is a 352 percent increase from the previous year.
In April 2019, the total amount of money made from travel before the pandemic was $11.7 billion. These goods and services include food, lodging, recreation, gifts, entertainment, local transportation in the United States, and other things that come up when travelling internationally.
In April 2022, 54 percent of all U.S. travel and tourism exports came from travel.
Passenger Fare Receipts
International visitors paid $2.0 billion in fares to U.S. airlines in April 2022, compared to $732 million in April 2021. This is a 174 percent increase from the year before.
In April 2019, the United States exported passenger air transportation services worth $3.4 billion. This was before the pandemic. These incomes come from the money that people from other countries spend on U.S. air carriers’ international flights.
In April 2022, 16 percent of all U.S. travel and tourism exports came from passenger fares.
Spending on health care, education, and short-term workers
In April 2022, educational and health-related tourism, as well as spending by border, seasonal, and other short-term workers in the United States, added up to $3.9 billion, up from $3.2 billion in April 2021. This is a 24 percent increase from the previous year.
Before the pandemic, all of these costs added up to $5 billion in April 2019.
In April 2022, 31% of all U.S. travel and tourism exports were spent on medical tourism, education, and short-term workers.
